Do you know the Difference between Organic Search Listing and Paid listings?

According to the Pew Internet & American life Project, 62% of searchers are unaware of the distinction between paid and unpaid results. 38 % of searchers are aware of a distinction between paid and unpaid results. So what are paid and unpaid search results?

Organic Search Listing or unpaid search results are websites that are listed in Search Engine page results for free usually found by search engine spiders or robots and then ranked based on the formula by the search engines.

Spiders, web crawler or Robots is a program or automated script which browses the internet in a methodical, automated manner. Web Crawlers crawls the web by browsing most of the websites out there and tries to find new websites built. Whenever the web crawler visits a website, it takes a snap shot or a picture of that particular website and stores it in its database and indexes it to later bring the relevant websites up whenever we search for a keyword. The way search engines index and rank the site differs from one search engine to another search engine.

Organic Search listings are the websites that shown in the search engine page results when you search for specific keyword, which is free and in order to get this free organic search engine results the designers, programmers or the Search engine Optimizer should follow the guidelines provided by these search engines while building the website. Some of the formulas are. Having a keyword rich page Title, have a keyword rich Description, having reputed links from trusted websites, having keywords within the copy basically building a website for a normal user where they can find useful information. There are number of guidelines given by these search engines. I have listed only a few.

On the other hand, Paid listing or Pay per click is websites that are usually listed either on the top and or listed on the right side of the results where it says sponsored results. In order to get listed in those results, they have to pay the search engines to be listed there in those areas. Normally it is based on bidding for keywords. If you want your website to be higher on the paid search results, you have to be the higher bidder for that particular keyword to get on top of other websites. If you are bidding for highly competitive keywords, you will eventually have to pay more in order to get into the top listings.

Organic Search Results and Paid listings have their own advantages. If you are looking for a short term or a seasonal listings, paid listings are one of the easiest and fastest way to get in to search results, Organic search listings are long term and will take time to get into search results depending on how much you follow the guidelines and dedicate the time to optimize the site.

Organic SEO – Sarasota, Florida

Organic SEO or Organic Search Engine Optimization is a effective way to have your website show up in the Search Engine Results. Organic or Natural SEO is to bring up a website without using any Pay per Click. As it says, the results should be organic/natural.

When a person visits Google and types in a query or keyword to find information or to buy/sell a product or for entertainment or for any research. They use a query or otherwise known as keyword to search for that particular related article or information.

Let’s say for example, if a person wants to find information on Real Estate Market in Sarasota, Florida. I use this example since Sarasota is popular for Real Estate, houses and Florida style Homes. The visitor will go to any search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask and type in that query in the search box and then the Search Engines gives you results based on the relevancy of the query comparing it with the website that has been stored in the index database. The way the search engines rank a website is using their own formula.

So what is the formula?

Well different search engine have different formula but most importantly most of the search engines look for some basic information in order to know more about the website. So the first thing when you publish your website online is the Crawlers or spiders ( A program used to visit all website) comes and visit your site, looks for a Title, so that it knows that this site is about xyz and it understands that your site is related to whatever you have in the title, So it is important to have a good Keyword rich title for your home and also for all the pages.

Then it looks for Description, A description is to tell both the search engines and the visitors what your site is about, and then it looks for Meta tags or HTML codes, these are codes to tell the spiders the information you like the spiders to gather, for example you meta tags should allow the robots to crawl your site, so that it can read and understand your site. If you don’t want the crawler to crawl your site, you may do so as well. But most importantly it is crucial to inform the crawler to allow access to your site. Once the spiders sees the access, it crawls within your site and looks for tags like what language is your site, what geographic the site needs to be. What content and if there are any Rating in the site and the name of the organization etc

Page Index

Now after looking at all these things, the crawler takes a snapshot of your website or cached. So it will take a snapshot and stores in the database or index. Indexing is same like indexing a book or folder. Here is where all the websites are stored and when a visitor search for a  query the crawlers goes to the index and finds the relevant site and gives the results, Now how the ranking method works?? Well as mentioned above, the search engine uses formula to rank a site, such as a good Title, good description, good content with keywords within the copy, a good structure of your website, good H1, H2 tags with keywords, so that not only the search engines understand but also the people who visit the site can understand easily what the site is about, A good navigation structure. Quality and trusted links to the other sites and also links pointing to your website from reputed sites, these are some of the formulas that search engines use to rank a site, this is not all of the formula just to mention a few of them.

Once you follow the guidelines of search engines and build a website, your site will be more likely be indexed and stored in the database. Organic Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process. It cannot be achieved by doing it one time, since the formula changes every often, not the basic formula but that are other formulas. A few to mention:

  •  The age of your domain name
  • The amount of content available to the search engines
  • The amount of websites linking to your website and their popularity
  • The information architecture of your website
  • The quality of a page build
  • The relevancy to the end user

How Search Engine Works Today and How Search Engines Rank Websites Wednesday, March 7, 2007

How Search Engine Works today and How Search Engines Rank Websites ?

SEO aka Search Engine Optimization is a process of having a website come up higher in the search results when you search with a query or keyword. There are crawler based search engines like Google and Human based directories

Now lets see how a Crawler based search engine works

Crawlers or Spiders are automated robots that crawls the web constantly to find new websites and links. The spiders visit the site whenever there is a new site is built and online. Depending on the popularity and recency of the update of your site, the crawlers visits the site. The more fresh content a site has, the more often the crawler will visit the site, what does this mean to you? Well if you have a website for a while or may be a new site, it is very important for you to update the site often, this does not necesssarily mean that you have to change the look and redesign the site often, it means that you have to have fresh content or the copy or the message which you are conveying to the visitors.

How can you add content?

You can add content if you have a press release or add more pages, give related articles, if there is something new with your company add that in your site, Create a seperate page for news, artciles, blogs and resources, keep posting new and interested articles and writing there in those pages, add links to your site, point to trusted sites, get links from trusted sites.

Lets say if you are expert in your field, write articles and post those articles in the site. There are tons of ways to add fresh content to your site. This allows the spiders to visit your site more often because the spiders can understand that your site is updated often.

Now once the crawlers relialzes that your site is updated often, it will visit your site often and now it know and what the spiders do is, It takes a snap shot of your website, it crawls your website remember it will only crawl if you allow the crawlers to crawl your site, you can also restrict the crawlers not to visit your site, So once you have the crawlers visit your site, it looks at your Page Title, Description, HTML tags and then it stores in the database. Now whenever some search for that keyword, it goes back to the index, (the place where it stores the sites in alphabetic order) and looks at the most relevant site using algorithm or formulas such as Keyword in the Title, Description, Copy a good Meta tag, Good links from and to other trusted sites. Freshness and all other formulas and then list the results.

So when we search XYZ the crawlers are not giving you live websites, but takes it from the database. So if you consider a good ranking result, first your site need to be crawled by the spiders.

In the part 2 of this article I will post more about ranking methods and formulas.
Until then have a great day.
