Consider this while optimizing for your Local listings

We all know how powerful and ROI a successful SEO in Local Optimization Campaign can yield. And with this Iphone, Google Earth, Mobile version, GPS-like location finder with Google Maps can be good news to local business owners.

http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=1175, in 2006, Stats for accessing the internet from a Wireless Phone for Local Search was 24 %.

According to the study, some 61% of local online searchers went on to make a purchase from a local business–but the majority of them (40%) visited the brick-and-mortar stores or picked up the phone.

Did you know that some people search the local using the Airport Codes? Which makes sense for those in that industry and who are traveling? It is easy for them to remember the Airport Code then to search the City

Imagine you are traveling and you have your cell phone in a hand, what would be an easy way to find something in your final destination or anywhere for that matter. Let’s say, while you travel you crave for Italian food and on your way to your Hotel, you like to stop by in an Italian place. What would you do? Pick up your phone, do a search for Italian restaurant with User reviews closest from your present location. You pull out the phone with the GPS like locater and search near by and end up in a good Italian Restaurant near you.

How can an Italian restaurant get listed and pop up when you search for it?

Well with some basic listings, any local businesses can be listed by following the simple step by step process. In one of my SEO post, I have mentioned, How to get listed in Local. But there is a lot you can do to enhance and get listed. What can you do?

  1. In the Name field, think of using keywords and followed by the Business Name
  2. You can use that additional address field to be creative with your keywords
  3. Have you thought of inserting Address in the Contact us Page and other appropriate web pages?
  4. How about using your phone number as a Title with keywords in pages like Contact us form page etc.
  5. Use your ZIP Code both in Local listings and also in the website in any related page, why? Remember most of the time, we tend to search online using the zip code and it’s easy to type the zip code than typing the city, state in a cell phone. Using Zip code in the Title tag can be useful and not only in Mobile, even in the Search engine Page results your site will have advantage of other sites.
  6. Airport Codes. Do you know who will search using Airport codes? People who are in the Airline Industry tend to use Airport Code, wherever possible to find information. Now, How about you adding your nearest Airport codes in your web page Titles and in the Local listings. Imagine how a Travel industry can make the best use of it
  7. Keeping up to date information in your local listings in vital and local listings makes it easier to fix any incorrect information. Now- a- days you can instantly update your listings, Take Full advantage of it. For example, the new Fix the correct location feature in Google Map is not only helpful for you, it is also helpful for anyone who is searching
  8. Ask your Customers to give a honest review of your business, that will not only help in the rankings also it will help the users to trust you
  9. You can add up to ten images in the local listings. Think what images will be effective. If your location is difficult to find. Take a picture of the well know landmark or the complex and with some simple editing you can point your store location. If you are a Dentist, How about adding some before and after pictures. If you are a printer, have some samples or portfolio pictures. Find out what picture will give a location, clear description and use to those who search.
  10. If you are listing your restaurant in the local listing, How about a link with Menu. You can create custom attributes, create your own link and link to an online version of your MENU. So those who search your location, can also get a feeling of what kind of food they are going to order when they arrive. Both you and them save time.
  11. With Custom attributes, be creative, you can create anything you want, so why no list something unique than your competition.
  12. Categories – Make use of categories in the category section. You can submit your business to multiple categories. Make use of those categories, if you don’t find the related category, you can suggest a category.
  13. Operation hours are pretty handy for those who are searching, before they come to your store, they want to make sure that your store in open during their visit. So list the exact hours of operation. You can even mention that upon request you can open and also create 2 set of hours for a single day
  14. Coupons- Make use of the coupons, It free and easy to create coupons, It provides you additional value to the customers
  15. The easiest way to verify is thru the phone, but you can also verify thru mail which might take a couple weeks and for some businesses, you can verify via SMS.

So what experience you had both Online and Offline Business Listing, Share your thought here. Feel Free to leave a comment or ask any questions regarding listing your Business in Local Listings. Organic SEO or Organic Search Engine Optimization Friday, March 9, 2007

Organic SEO – Sarasota, Florida

Organic SEO or Organic Search Engine Optimization is a effective way to have your website show up in the Search Engine Results. Organic or Natural SEO is to bring up a website without using any Pay per Click. As it says, the results should be organic/natural.

When a person visits Google and types in a query or keyword to find information or to buy/sell a product or for entertainment or for any research. They use a query or otherwise known as keyword to search for that particular related article or information.

Let’s say for example, if a person wants to find information on Real Estate Market in Sarasota, Florida. I use this example since Sarasota is popular for Real Estate, houses and Florida style Homes. The visitor will go to any search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask and type in that query in the search box and then the Search Engines gives you results based on the relevancy of the query comparing it with the website that has been stored in the index database. The way the search engines rank a website is using their own formula.

So what is the formula?

Well different search engine have different formula but most importantly most of the search engines look for some basic information in order to know more about the website. So the first thing when you publish your website online is the Crawlers or spiders ( A program used to visit all website) comes and visit your site, looks for a Title, so that it knows that this site is about xyz and it understands that your site is related to whatever you have in the title, So it is important to have a good Keyword rich title for your home and also for all the pages.

Then it looks for Description, A description is to tell both the search engines and the visitors what your site is about, and then it looks for Meta tags or HTML codes, these are codes to tell the spiders the information you like the spiders to gather, for example you meta tags should allow the robots to crawl your site, so that it can read and understand your site. If you don’t want the crawler to crawl your site, you may do so as well. But most importantly it is crucial to inform the crawler to allow access to your site. Once the spiders sees the access, it crawls within your site and looks for tags like what language is your site, what geographic the site needs to be. What content and if there are any Rating in the site and the name of the organization etc

Page Index

Now after looking at all these things, the crawler takes a snapshot of your website or cached. So it will take a snapshot and stores in the database or index. Indexing is same like indexing a book or folder. Here is where all the websites are stored and when a visitor search for a  query the crawlers goes to the index and finds the relevant site and gives the results, Now how the ranking method works?? Well as mentioned above, the search engine uses formula to rank a site, such as a good Title, good description, good content with keywords within the copy, a good structure of your website, good H1, H2 tags with keywords, so that not only the search engines understand but also the people who visit the site can understand easily what the site is about, A good navigation structure. Quality and trusted links to the other sites and also links pointing to your website from reputed sites, these are some of the formulas that search engines use to rank a site, this is not all of the formula just to mention a few of them.

Once you follow the guidelines of search engines and build a website, your site will be more likely be indexed and stored in the database. Organic Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process. It cannot be achieved by doing it one time, since the formula changes every often, not the basic formula but that are other formulas. A few to mention:

  •  The age of your domain name
  • The amount of content available to the search engines
  • The amount of websites linking to your website and their popularity
  • The information architecture of your website
  • The quality of a page build
  • The relevancy to the end user

Does Google uses the theory from 1800’s to rank a Site ?? Wednesday, February 7, 2007

Does Google uses the theory from 1800’s to rank a Site ??

While I was going thru the Google Algorithm and ranking theory, came up with some fascinating facts and interesting theories used to rank a website. Find all the related links and resources below

Perron-Frobenius theorem:
Perron–Frobenius theorem, named after Oskar Perron and Ferdinand Georg Frobenius, is a theorem in matrix theory about the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a real positive
n×n matrix.

Perron-Frobenius theorem has particular use in algebraic graph theory.  The “underlying graph” of a nonnegative real n \times nmatrix is the graph with vertices 1, \ldots, n and arc ij if and only if  A_{ij}\neq 0. If the underlying graph of such a matrix is strongly connected, then the matrix is irreducible, and thus the generalized Perron-Frobenius theorem applies.

Google page rank:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.

Please let me know your thoughts and comments, even thou Math is not my subject, definitely love to hear from people who are good at Math.

Theorem 2.1 (Perron-Frobenius Theorem )
Source: http://www9.org/w9cdrom/251/251.html

If a n-dimensional matrix is positive or non-negative irreducible, then

  • The spectrum radius of , , is also a latent root of ;
  • There is a positive eigenvector of corresponding to ;
  • The eigenfunction of has a single root , i.e., ,
  •

Although the rank algorithms based on linkage structure break through the limitation of traditional IR technology, they still have some shortcomings:

  • Only the authority metric has been taken into account;
  • The iterative computation results in bad performance;
  • It is difficult to deal with the overflow or underflow problem during iteration;
  • Because of the “rank sink problem”, the iterative computation may not converge.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Sarasota/Bradenton Florida
Definition of Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
The process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine like Google, Yahoo, MSN. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site.
Let’s say for example if someone is searching for Search Engine Optimization firm (SEO) in Sarasota/Bradenton Florida. That particular search firm should rank high in the search results for the term “SEO” or “Search Engine Optimization Sarasota”.

So what are the things you have to do in order to get high in the rankings??

First and foremost Build a Website with visitors in mind, please do not build a website with search engines in mind. Lots of website was banned for doing this.
Follow the guidelines provided by the search engines.
Build a website which is functional and easy for both search engines and visitors
Give a good title to you website. If you are a Search engine optimization firm in Sarasota give a Title saying,”Search Engine Optimization Company Sarasota Fl”
Give a good descriptiom. Again give a description like, “XYZCompany offers services like Search Engine Optimization, SEO, in and around Sarasota Bradenton areas.
Do a keyword research before you build a website, so that you can optimize your site based on that keyword.
Include keywords in the content.
Give links to reliable sources and resources in your website.
Give articles, blogs and share your expertise so that visitors will come back to your website again
SEO Process:
Study and analyze your web site
Understanding and determining your competition.
Research and finalization of keywords
Development of initial traffic and base ranking reports.
Revising and re-writing existing pages of the web site
Content development.
Building link popularity for your web site.
Continuous re-optimization
Updating the site with latest algorithm

Podcast How Podcast works

The Fox Internet Marketing Sarasota
A very useful article from ezine about How Podcast Works.

How Podcasting Works

By Darryl Power

Essentially, podcasting allows you to select the things you’d like to listen to, subscribe to them, have them downloaded to your computer or portable audio device, and listen to them when you want to. Once you’ve subscribed, they will update automatically for you, like a magazine you don’t think about until the subscription arrives in your mailbox every month. Here is the link http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Darryl_Power
What is the advantage of a podcast over other types of broadcasting? Podcasts assimilate radio, portable CD players, and satellite radio, into one convenient format, and allow new uses not previously available. So what is it that you can listen to? What kinds of podcasting are available? The answer to those questions is this: everything you can possibly imagine! You will be amazed at the volume and variety of podcasts out there and the possibilities that exist.

Click here to read the article
Just as the Internet has allowed pretty much anybody to create visual files of information and entertainment, called web pages, podcasting has allowed virtually anybody to create audio files of information and entertainment. While the technical details are not important here, all someone needs in order to become a podcaster is a computer and an Internet hook-up. You don’t even need a microphone to create your first podcast. (You may want to get one later, but you don’t need one now). In fact, if you have a telephone and can browse the Internet, you will be able to listen to podcasts and even create your first podcast by the end of the next chapter!
Who can podcast? Anyone can podcast! We’ll go into much greater detail later about who might want to podcast, but generally speaking, there are several reasons why everyone would want to podcast:
• Organizations like churches and nonprofits will podcast to keep people up to date with what’s going on, providing news, seminars and speeches, meeting transcriptions, etc.
• Businesses will podcast to maintain their name in the marketplace, offer information on products or strategies, and position themselves as the expert in their industry.
• Individuals will podcast if they have something to say to the world. Opinions, rants, and artistic offerings are all fair game in podcasting.
Podcasting formats are as varied as the types of podcasts available. Some podcasts are like monologues where one person simply shares their ideas into a microphone for the listener to hear. Other podcasts are a dialogue between two or more people and may or may not follow format. Some podcasts are unscripted while others seem to be very scripted. Podcasting contain music, interviews, and while audio podcasts are quite popular now, audio/video podcasts are slowly gaining popularity as well.
All the best for your online success

Podcast Secrets Revealed
By Jeff Mills

There you are, flipping through the radio stations yet again, looking for SOMETHING, ANYTHING, worth listening to. Maybe you’ll find a song here or there that you like, or a talk show on a subject you are interested in. Then it’s time to flip the stations again. “What I need,” you think to yourself, “is my own personal radio station.”

Enter the world of podcasting! Podcasting is just like having your own radio station, programmed with your favorite items and ready for you to listen anywhere, anytime. With podcasting, you can listen to:

[o] WHAT you want

[o] WHEN you want

[o] WHERE you want

No more searching and hoping to find a radio station that plays your favorite music. No more missing a talk show broadcast because you are sitting in class or in a meeting at the wrong time. With podcasting, you get just the content you want, from the sources you want, when you want. And there are no ads or commercials! What Tivo has done for your TV viewing, podcasting can do for your radio listening, and there is no FCC regulations either!

So what exactly is podcasting? A podcast is an audio file stored on the Internet that you can download to your computer or MP3 player and listen to whenever you want. It might be music, or it could be a talk show, a lecture, a recorded tele-seminar, a sermon, a football game, etc. Podcasting gives you the ultimate in choice and convenience.

o Podcasting is all about… CHOICE

Podcasting offers you unlimited choices in listening. Even though podcasting is a relatively new technology, there are already thousands of podcasts to which you can subscribe. No radio station in your city that plays the indy music you love? Check out East Detroit Radio.

Want to improve the koi pond in your backyard? Subscribe to Koi Club of the Air.

Parenting questions? Try the Front Porch Parenting podcast.

You can find a podcast on literally any subject you are interested in! In fact, www.podcastalley.com currently lists 2,380 podcasts in 15 different categories, while www.ipodder.org lists 4,493.

Another advantage of podcasting is that, because podcasts can appeal to niche audiences, they can cover their topics in much greater depth and be far more informative than regular radio broadcasts, which must appeal to a wide audience. Also, with a podcast, you can back up and listen to a segment again if you missed something the first time. If you come to a segment that is boring, you can fast-forward. You can listen as many times as you want to all or part of the podcast. And you can stop listening all together for a few minutes, hours, or even days if something else comes up.

o Podcasting is all about… CONVENIENCE

MP3 files have been available for download from the internet for years. But what makes podcasting different and truly useful is that you can subscribe to programs you are interested in. This means you don’t have to check your favorite podcast web sites every day for new episodes and manually download them.

Instead, free podcasting software automatically downloads new episodes to your computer as soon as they are available. This makes it easy and convenient for you to stay up-to-date with your favorite podcasts.

Once your podcasts are downloaded to your computer, you can synch them to your MP3 player, burn them to a CD for playback on your CD player, or simply listen to them through your computer’s speakers. This gives you the ultimate convenience of listening to your programs at your leisure. You can listen to the podcasts whenever you want – as you are driving, walking, exercising, knitting, etc. With a podcast, you can be mobile, live your life, and listen to your content ANYWHERE.

o Podcasting is… FREE & EASY

Not only are podcasts themselves generally free, but so is the podcasting software you need! Both podcasts and podcasting software are easy to find on the internet and are easy to use.

Podcasting is… waiting for you!

If you haven’t been exposed to podcasts yet, you soon will be! Podcasts are literally everywhere now, and more podcasts are being created every day.
